| Re-paint |
[10 Dec 2009|03:47am] |
I haven't painted in a long time and have decided I need to do it more often. I love it. For this craft, it's a wooden Santa decoration (about 2 ft. tall) we were given. I repainted (the original job was flaking and not to mention horrible). I have no idea how old this wooden Santa is, but now he looks MUCH better. Probably better than he's ever looked (aside from when he had leaves and a tree trunk and all that jazz).
One of these days I'll remember before pictures BEFORE I repaint something.
Here's the after shots:

( two detail shots )
I'm SO happy with this Santa. I can't stop looking at him. Maybe I'm officially in the holiday spirit?

How About Orange posted this great roundup of holiday felt ornaments that I thought some of you might enjoy.
I especially like the ice skate ornaments with the paper clip blades.

The retro inspired ones are really cute too, but then again, I'm a sucker for rick rack.
I hope you enjoy these as much as I plan to! :)

| Crocheting... |
[09 Dec 2009|03:16pm] |
I've never learned how to crochet, but often, when I see someone's products, I wished that I knew how!
Does anyone have any good "crochet for dummies" type books (or IS there a Crochet for Dummies book?) lol
Thanks for your help everyone! :)

| Hunting for Fashion Design, Patternmaking, etc links |
[09 Dec 2009|04:35pm] |
Hi everyone! I am on the hunt for great fashion design, patternmaking, tailoring, etc type links to add to the Fashion Students Online link directory. I really hope to build this directory into a fabulous resource. There are some great link resource sites already, I know, such as costume.org but they do not cover the topics we hope to cover (schools, manufacturers, freelancers, tutorials, suppliers, and more).
If you have only a few links that you would like to submit you can do so at this address, but you need to be logged in (I can not override that unfortunately): http://www.fashionstudentsonline.com/submit-a-link
If however you have ten or more links to submit we have just set up a new multi-link submission page (you do not need to be a member): http://www.fashionstudentsonline.com/multiple-links
We even accept exported favourites / bookmark files from your browser! Just export your bookmarks out of your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc) and send the file to us and we will do the sorting and adding. It couldn't be easier!
This message has been x-posted to advanced_sewing, corset_makers, sew_hip, and craftgrrl
Thank you!

| Cheap ornament ideas? |
[09 Dec 2009|09:45am] |
|
Hey all. Anyone got ideas for cheap ornaments? I am thinking some paper ones could be cool. I don't have a lot of money to spend this year so I will be crafting for the tree. I also really want to do popcorn strands, but I know the dogs will eat them so any idea with food is out. Thanks!

I've been being crafty lately and decided to look for a crafting community. Found it!
I've been making button ornaments lately and that is really the only thing I have photographed. So ( here you go )

| Why hello there! |
[08 Dec 2009|10:37am] |
Hi everyone :) Just joined up and am having a fantastic time looking through all the posts. I'm bowled over with the amount of talent in this community.
I make Magnetic Hair Clips, basically they can attach to any metal clip or metal headband! It makes them interchangeable, some of my clients have used them as pins!
And now for pictures!!!

Sorry for all the pictures!!! ^.^

| wood/paper pendants |
[08 Dec 2009|10:46am] |
I am interested in making pendants similar to this here:
Is ModPodge the appropriate thing to use to attach the paper to the wood?
Thanks!
EDIT: image removed, but I'm looking to attach a paper design to a thin piece of wood.

I had a baby at the start of October, so while he has been sleeping on me I have been trying to get together some photograph I have taken to give as gifts. These four are ones I really like.

Thanks for letting me share. Sorry it's just a cruddy camera phone picture.

I'm not in a festive mood at all but I can't seem to stop making ornaments. (Even though I'm not putting up a tree this year.) Anyone want some ornaments? Lol.

( more here )
I bought a load of cards on sale after the holidays last year and just found them in my stash. Add a hole punch and a bit of scrap yarn and you've got cool ornaments. :)

| Leaning how to embroider? |
[07 Dec 2009|01:53pm] |
Hi everyone!
I'm getting really jealous of seeing all these cute embroidered things on this community, and in 'Bust', and pretty much everywhere I look online. Especially since my mom recently framed a bunch of my grandmother's embroidery from the Great Depression, and that lady could sew like no other.
I want to start; where do I go? Any books? Would a class be better than self-teaching? I'm also itching to start a new hobby as I'm finishing graduate school this term, and am looking forward to a lot more free time!

| Handwritten Embroidery |
[07 Dec 2009|07:10am] |

I have been practicing a little embroidery. This is a (slightly modified) Richard Brautigan quote. (Not modified on purpose..) I think that embroidered handwriting is just so sweet. I'll have to gather more quotes to do this with.

| A question for sew-ers |
[07 Dec 2009|11:43am] |
Is there a no-sew (apart from hemming etc) way of making a half or three quarter circle skirt, with no side or back seams? I just can't get my head around how you might be able to do it by folding fabric etc.
Any tutorials or tips would be much appreciated!
